Dear Parents and carers,
It's the end of another busy and productive week at Ellingham. I can't quite believe how quickly this year is going by!
I am incredibly proud of our Year 4 children for their outstanding focus and determination this week. They have been working tirelessly on recalling their times tables in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check. Seeing how embedded their recall is, both in the multiplication facts but also the inverse division facts, is wonderful to see. Their hard work in daily practice is paying off, and they should all be very proud of their achievements! Thank you to the class teachers, and other members of the support staff team, who have worked with Year 4 to ensure they were ready for this key assessment point in the primary calendar.
On Wednesday, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming our new 2026 Reception families to the school. It was wonderful to see both the new and the familiar faces, and to feel the shared excitement as we prepare for their children to start their primary school journey with us in September. Thank you to everyone who attended; we are thrilled to welcome you into our school family.
There has been an electric buzz of anticipation in the air this week as our Year 6 pupils anticipate their residential trip this weekend! This trip is a momentous milestone in their final year of primary school, designed to build independence, teamwork, and lifelong memories. We wish them, and the staff members accompanying them, a safe, exciting, and unforgettable time of adventure.
Finally, I must take this opportunity to reinforce the absolute importance of excellent school attendance. In line with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance, Working Together to Improve School Attendance. I would like to remind all families that holidays must not be taken during term time.
The DfE framework makes it clear that building a "whole school culture" of high attendance is a joint responsibility. Every single day of school missed creates gaps in learning, places unnecessary pressure on children, and impacts their academic progress and social development. Headteachers are legally restricted from granting leaves of absence unless there are truly exceptional circumstances. We ask for your full cooperation in planning family holidays strictly during the scheduled school break periods so that your child does not miss out on vital classroom instruction.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making our school a vibrant place to learn. I hope you all have a wonderful, restful weekend.
Best wishes,
Margaret

We had a wonderful day at the Chessington Celebrates event over the half-term break. Despite the very hot weather, our school stall was a popular spot for visiting families. Children thoroughly enjoyed the activities on offer, including Hook-a-Duck, painting, and searching for dinosaurs in the sand. It was a great opportunity to connect with our local community, and we were delighted to hand out plenty of school leaflets, stickers, and Ellingham balloons throughout the day.
The highlight of the day was the performance by our school choir singing in the arena. We were very proud of them and they sang beautifully.
Mrs Johonnett and two of our pupils also had the pleasure of meeting the new Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Thay Thayalan, and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jane Lim and telling them all about our wonderful school.
Unfortunately, only two out of ten classes are at or above our whole school attendance target of 96%. With a whole-school attendance percentage of 93.5%, we remain in the bottom 10-20% of schools nationally.
Every day of attendance matters. There is still key learning taking place - we are not at the end of the academic year yet and have not completed the curriculum. Skills such as skimming and scanning in reading to retrieve key facts, or incorporating well-chosen grammatical features in writing, enable children to access deeper levels of critical thinking where they express their ideas and respond to the ideas of others. Children who regularly miss a day here or a morning there do not recieve this daily practice, making it harder for them access this deeper thinking because their key skills are not secure. Evidence shows that pupils who attend regularly make rapid progress. This creates very real variations of confidence in the classroom and this has nothing to do with ability.
Well done to 4RS, 5CS and 3BP for coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the half term showdown!
A massive shout out to Saarthak, Imogen M and Olivia M for being the highest scoring players of the battle.
Make sure you take part in this week’s whole school battle for your chance to be on the leaderboard!
Today, our Year 4 students are bringing home a Brite Box packed with fresh ingredients to cook a Rainbow Frittata with a fresh Salad. It’s a fantastic, hands-on way for the children to practice essential kitchen skills like chopping, peeling, and whisking.
If you'd like to cook this recipe at home please see the recipe card.
If you can help at the Summer Fair email: friendsofellingham@outlook.com or contact the school office.
We can only run these events if we have the support of volunteers - Thank you in advance.

I just want to remind parents and carers, on behalf of the wonderful Friends of Ellingham, that non-uniform days are a way of giving something back. So if a child takes part in the fun of a non-uniform day, there will be something to give in return. This may be a donation, or a 'thing'.
We have two non-uniform days coming up. If a child comes to school in non-uniform on these days, this is what they need to be provided with to donate! Thank you.
Friday 12th June: toys, books or board games for the Summer Fair
Friday 19th June: a bottle of something
We are also collecting empty jars. There will be a crate in the main reception for these to be left. Thank you in advance.
This week the Nursery children enjoyed shared drawing, they practised holding their pencils and making big movements to create their art work.
In Maths this week, Reception have been learning about odd and even numbers. The children used Numicon to sort numbers into odd and even groups and explained how they knew whether a number was odd or even. We were very impressed with their mathematical reasoning and confidence when sharing their ideas!
Year 1 has been exploring 1 more and 1 less in Maths and used lego to show this. The children enjoyed using the blocks to add and subtract 1 of their number.
This week, Year 2 started their new computing topic of programming. We explored the programme Scratch to see if we could work out how to make our sprite move and change the background. Some of us managed to even add sound!
Year 3 have been learning about unit fractions in maths this week. We have been identifying parts and wholes in different contexts. Today, we divided our whole (12 cubes) into equal parts then practised saying what fraction of the whole we had found.
This week, our Year 4 scientists became real-life inventors as they tackled a shocking challenge: lighting up a bulb using only tin foil and a single AA battery! There were no switches, no wires, and no instructions—just pure teamwork and problem-solving. It was fantastic to watch our pupils collaborate, trial, and error their way to that brilliant "aha!" moment when the bulbs finally glowed. Future electrical engineers in the making!
This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
