Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another bustling and brilliant week here at school. As I walk through the corridors, I am constantly reminded of what a vibrant community we have here at Ellingham.
Our Ellingham value this week has been all about Friendship. It has been heart-warming to look out across the playground and see our values in action. I’ve personally witnessed so many wonderful examples of children being kind and inclusive. Whether it’s inviting someone new to join a game of Nine Square, or offering a comforting word to a peer, the "friendship ripples" are felt everywhere. It’s a great reminder that while academic success is important, being a "good human" is the greatest skill of all.
For our Year 6 families, we are holding an important information session regarding the upcoming SATS. This is a chance to demystify the process and share the timetable. This will be on Wednesday 11th February at 6pm.
Our wonderful Inclusion Team is hosting a relaxed coffee morning on Friday 6th February at 9am for all parents and carers. The focus is "Online Safety and Digital Wellbeing" and will be led by our Educations Wellbeing Practitioner. The EWP is part of our Emotional health service in Kingston is able to signpost for further advice where needed.
Whatever your plans this weekend, whether staying cosy at home, splashing in puddles or settling into a good book, I wish you a restful and peaceful time with your family.
Best wishes,
Margaret

I have to confess that in assembly, I missed that 4G had 100% and announced 4RS as attendance winners! But rest assured that both classes will get a reward next week.
This week we celebrated attendance with 8 children from across the school year groups who have attended 100% since September. Well done, keep up the good work.
We all enjoyed our hot chocolate, talked about our highlight of the week at school and what we are going to do over the weekend.
Cherry Class have been walking with dinosaurs this week! We used an information book to find out how tall a diplodocus was (8m), and then used a helium balloon to recreate the height! We also measured the size of a diplodocus footprint (1m) and found out how many of our footprints fit inside (50)!
Year 1 helped Jigsaw Jack make a jam sandwich in PSHE this week. The children thought carefully about each step needed to successfully complete the task. They discovered three things that help us do our best learning - watching, listening, doing and a mixture of all 3 will help us make progress and achieve our goals.
Year 2 had a fun PE lesson on Friday! We are working on aiming accurately at targets and this week, we played some group target games with a ball. We had to roll and throw the ball, and if we didn’t catch it there was a forfeit!
This week, Year 3 became scientists to investigate if people with longer index fingers can flick a paper ball further. We started by making predictions then measuring our index fingers. Then each group took turns to have a go and measure the distance the ball travelled. Our results varied but we concluded there is not always a correlation between the two.
Year 4 stepped out of the classroom and into a world of vibrant colour and ancient tradition this Wednesday! We were incredibly lucky to visit the Shree Ghanapathy Hindu Temple, where our R.E. learning leapt into life. From the moment we were welcomed through the doors, the children were wide-eyed, taking in the stunning architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. We learned about the deep meanings behind the rituals, the stories of the deities, and the heart of Hindu culture. They came away with a wealth of new knowledge and a real "wow" factor that only a trip like this can provide. A massive thank you to our hosts for making us feel so at home! When we returned to school, the children had a fabulous afternoon creating Rangoli patterns out of sand.
Year 5 have been Mayan artists this week. We were painting our backgrounds using the colours ochre, terracotta or turquoise inspired by the artist Carlos Merida, ready for our mono printing next week.
Today, Year 6 became reading detectives as they worked to "crack the SATs" in an active reading workshop! Each class investigated the seven key types of reading skills needed to master comprehension questions: Retrieval, Vocabulary, Summary, Prediction, Author’s Choice, Inference, and Compare & Contrast.
Working in teams, the children were challenged to sort a variety of SATs-style questions into these categories by hunting for specific "clue words." For example, they learned that:
Retrieval questions often start with "Find and copy" or "According to the text."
Author’s Choice focuses on why a writer used certain metaphors or structures to create a specific mood.
They had so much fun!
The Year 6 well-being ambassadors planned and delivered a whole-school assembly on Wednesday. They gave the children different scenarios and identified different feelings along a scale. They were confident, engaging and inspired us all! Huge well done team!
Well done to all the children who received the celebration certificate for friendship this week.
Our next event is Friday 13th February:
FOE Love Ellingham Sale
Look out for more information later this term.
Following a recent incident involving children and the River Thames, the Kingston & Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership Team (KRSCP) would like to remind our school community about the importance of water safety. With the current weather conditions and the likelihood of further cold spells, all families are requested to help reinforce water safety messages with children and young people. This is particularly important at this time of year, as colder temperatures significantly increase the risk of drowning, both at home and in the wider community.
Please remind your children that entering rivers or going onto frozen water is extremely dangerous.
Cold water shock - one of the main causes of drowning, can occur in water temperatures below 15°C. During the winter months, the River Thames typically falls to between 3°C and 9°C (37°F – 48°F).
If someone were to fall into cold water, they should try to float on their back to help control their breathing, rather than attempting to swim. We have included some helpful, age-appropriate resources below that provide guidance on staying safe around water.
Water safety for Teenagers and young people
Water safety London Fire Brigade
Winter water safety - Royal Life Saving Society
We encourage you to review these resources together with your children and to discuss the risks, particularly when spending time outdoors near water.
Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner, has released a new guide titled What I wish my parents or carers knew: A guide for parents on managing children's digital lives This guide explores why children often struggle to talk about their online lives, and offers practical ways to help including an activity pack.
"Parenting today can feel overwhelming — especially when childhood looks so different from what we grew up with. There’s no manual, and it can be hard to keep up with the fast-changing digital world your child moves through every day. This guide aims to make those conversations easier and help you support your child with confidence" - Dame Rachel de Souza
This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
