Dear Parents and carers,Â
This has been one of those weeks where I look around our school and feel immense pride in our pupils and the dedicated staff who support them.
First, I want to extend a massive congratulations to our wonderful Year 1 pupils, who completed their Phonics Screening Check this week. They approached the challenge with incredible focus, determination, and—most importantly—big smiles on their faces. The progress they have made in their reading journeys this year is nothing short of amazing. A huge thank you to our Year 1 team for prepping them so beautifully, and to you for all those evenings spent practicing at home. You have a class of certified reading superstars!
Meanwhile, Year 6 swapped their playscripts for harnesses and paddles as they embarked on their highly anticipated residential trip to PGL. They have had an absolute whirlwind of a week, tackling a massive range of adventurous activities including:
Abseiling (requiring some serious bravery!)
Kayaking (with varying degrees of actual staying afloat)
Archery
Vertical challenge
Zip wire
While the activities themselves were fantastic, what made me proudest was the feedback from both our own school staff and the PGL center instructors. They noted that our Year 6 pupils were consistently polite, deeply respectful to everyone they met, and an absolute joy to have. They represented Ellingham Primary flawlessly, showing incredible teamwork and lifting each other up when things got tough. Welcome back, team—go get some well-deserved rest!
Thank you all for your continued support in making our school community such a vibrant and positive place to be. Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!Â
Best wishes,
Margaret

Congratulations to Oak class who had the highest class attendance this week, beating Year 4 to the spot!
Well done to 4RS, 3BP and 5CS for topping the leaderboard of the back to school battle!
Congratulations to Olivia M, Imogen and Elodie for being the top 3 players of the battle.
This week, be sure to take part in the whole school battle to help out your class!
This week, we repeated the value of Respect. We wanted to link it to the respect of something different: water.Â
The 13th to 20th June is 'Drowning Prevention Week'. This is a nationwide initiative dedicated to educating everybody about water safety and the Water Safety Code. Please do look as this safety poster with your child over the weekend. We spoke about it a lot in assembly, but the messages can never be said too often.Â
A group of children went to a Kingston Athletics tournament on Tuesday. They had to compete in the 6oom, Vortex throwing event, standing long jump, 75m sprints and finally ended with a relay race. We had a great time- despite the downpours and the children behaved exceptionally throughout.Â
Today, our Year 4 students are bringing home a Brite Box packed with fresh ingredients to cook a flavourful Lahmacun (Turkish Pizza), available in both a classic lamb mince version and a delicious vegetarian option featuring mushrooms and red peppers! Accompanied by a crisp, fresh cucumber and tomato salad , it’s a fantastic, hands-on way for the children to practice essential kitchen skills like finely dicing, kneading dough, and safely frying ingredients.
If you'd like to cook this recipe at home, please see the recipe card.
If you can help at the Summer Fair email: friendsofellingham@outlook.com or contact the school office.
We can only run these events if we have the support of volunteers - Thank you in advance.

Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of our Friends of the School (FOE) and your wonderful, ongoing generosity, we are purchasing a brand-new iPad for every single year group!
These iPads will be a fantastic asset to our classrooms. Teachers and students will be using them to capture photos and videos of all the exciting activities happening around the school, as well as using them to directly enhance daily teaching and learning.
We are incredibly grateful for your support in making this digital upgrade possible for our children. Thank you for working together to enrich our school!
Next Friday the Friends of Ellingham would be grateful if you could donate a bottle of in return for another non-uniform day.Â
We are also collecting empty jars. There will be a crate in the main reception for these to be left. Thank you in advance.
This week we have been learning about floating and sinking, luckily all of our boats floated! The children used rich language and imagination as they explored their surroundings, coming across dangerous sea creatures and sailing to a pirate party.Â
Reception have enjoyed reading Biscuit Bear this week. They were inspired to make their own Biscuit Bears from playdough and design their own biscuit bear characters. What an imaginative and creative bunch they are!
Year 1 combined art, science and geography this week as they explored the 4 seasons. They learnt all about the changes we will see around us from leaves falling off trees, changes in the weather and baby animals being born. They got creative to show the 4 seasons in 1 piece of art. Take a look at their amazing colouring in the year 1 classroom window!
Year 2 planted seeds this week! In our lesson we all planted our own sunflower seeds, making sure they had what they needed to germinate. Over the next few weeks we will be watching them grow to see how tall they get and how many leaves they have.Â
Year 3 have been learning about The Romans in history this half term. This week, they learnt about the famous historical figure Boudica and why she important. Mr Birch managed to use a time machine to bring the tribal warrior back from the past and into the present so that the children could ask their burning questions.
On Friday, our Year 4 artists were busy creating amazing 3D models of planet Earth using mod rock. The children worked incredibly hard and showed off their fantastic geography skills, identifying the equator, lines of latitude, and lines of longitude on their globes. The teamwork on display was just as impressive as the final results. Way to go, Year 4!
This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. Â If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
