Dear Parents and Carers,
What another wonderful week it has been at Ellingham. Sports continue to feature highly in our calendar with Year 5 and 6 attending a Dodgeball competition. Year 2 were very excited about their Christmas journey at The King's Centre, and the week ended with a truly wonderful assembly by Year 4 on Ancient Greece!
The children were outstanding. They brought their learning to life by enacting the rivalry between the Spartans and Athenians and recording an engaging 'Newsround'. The expression and intonation in the children's voices as they recited their lines not only demonstrated they remembered this historic knowledge, but can apply and evaluate it. This is the great higher-level thinking that happens at Ellingham each week.
Year 4 also talked about democracy in Athens. We referenced democracy during Remembrance Day, and will have our own democratic vote next week during Parliament Week. These real and meaningful links to key values underpin the exceptional curriculum here at Ellingham, and it was wonderful to see it brought to life by Year 4 today. Thank you to the children and the amazing year 4 staff team who put the assembly together.
Another of my favourite moments this week was hearing the squeals of delight from the Key Stage 1 children here on the ground floor as the first falling of snow fell earlier this week! It was so cute. Unfortunately, it didn't settle, but maybe we'll get another flurry soon.
One of my areas of focus this year is attendance. It is a key focus for the Department for Education, also, and as such, I would really like to have your thoughts on this issue. Below is a link to a short online form with a few questions aimed at getting your feedback on attendance. It takes just 5 minutes and I would really appreciate your time in completing it. The form is anonymous. Please do take just 5 minutes this weekend so I can have your important thoughts on this matter. Thank you in advance.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
Warm regards,
Margaret
Year 6: Remember to bring in any large cardboard, clean tin cans, tea bags and any coloured card/paper you have please to make your Anderson shelters. These need to be in by Wednesday 26th November.
Year 5: Remember to bring in cereal boxes for DT day on Friday 28th.

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Barlow and her husband welcomed a beautiful baby girl to the world on the 5th November! She arrived with a bang, and mother and daughter are doing really well. Congratulations to all the family.
This week, we said goodbye to the wonderful Alana Glenn. Alana has been with Ellingham for over four years, and her gentle, empathetic nature with the children has had a great impact. We wish her will on her next very important step as she focuses on her family.
We’re so excited for our Winter Wonderland Fair on Saturday 29th November (12-3pm) - it’s set to be a full of festive afternoon for the whole family to enjoy.
🎅 Visit Santa’s Grotto
Your child can meet Santa himself in his beautifully decorated grotto!
This will be £3 per child and includes a small gift to take home, spaces are limited so please book asap to avoid disappointment.
✨ New for this year - “Elfridges”
We’re thrilled to introduce Elfridges, a magical pop up shop where children can experience the joy of giving!
Here’s how it works:
You pre-pay £3.50 per gift and your child will visit Elfridges at any time during the fair.
They’ll choose a special present, bag it up, write their own label, take it home and pop it under the tree, ready to surprise a family member on Christmas morning. Please note these are adult presents only 😃
🎄 Bookings for both Santa’s Grotto and Elfridges are now open. Please note booking for both events will close at 3pm on Friday, 21st November.
Thank you for your generosity and all your donations so far for the fair, we have one more Non-Uniform day next week.
🍾 Friday 28th November – Bottle Donation Day
Please send in a bottle of any drink (soft or otherwise!) for our popular bottle tombola.
👉 This is a non-uniform day – children can wear their own clothes!
Did you know there's a fantastic way to potentially double the funds we raise for our school, simply by tapping into resources many of us already have access to? It's called matched funding, and it's a game-changer for PTAs like ours!
Please read the letter here for further information.
This weeks recipe box is for Cheesy Broccoli Pasta Bake or Tuna Broccoli Pasta Bake.. The recipes are here if anyone else would like to cook it.
Thank you to everyone who visited the book fair this week. We will let you know next week how much we raised to purchase more books for the school.
A few weeks ago, our combined Year 5 and 6 boys football team represented the school with distinction at their recent tournament. From the very first whistle, the boys played with incredible determination and cohesion, showcasing excellent teamwork across the two year groups. They navigated some tough fixtures with slick passing and resilient defending, battling their way through to the final stages. Although they narrowly missed out on the top spot in a hard-fought final game, securing second place overall is a fantastic achievement.
This month’s artist is Banksy and the closing date is Friday 28th November. Thank you to those who have already entered. We can’t wait to see more creative entries.
This week, Pear Class were finding out about winter weather. We had to dress up very warmly to play outside. There was great excitement on Wednesday though, when it actually snowed at Ellingham!
Cherry Class had great fun colour-mixing using the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue. The children explored different combinations and were so excited when they discovered how to make a new colour!
Year 1 learnt about different types of puppets in DT this week and had a go at making their very own stick puppet. The children designed their character and considered what it would sound like. They then practiced by putting on a puppet show.
Year 2 enjoyed a trip to the King’s Centre to see the Christmas Journey. We went back in time to when Jesus was born and the volunteers showed us the story of his birth. We all had a lovely afternoon, and it ties in perfectly with our RE this half term!
Did we hear the West End calling? Year 4 delivered an outstanding performance, captivating their audience with their assembly focusing on the rich history of the Ancient Greeks. Their dedication and theatrical flair were evident throughout the presentation. We are so incredibly proud of all the children!
In RE this half term, Year 3 are asking the question: ‘What is it like for people to follow God?’ This week we thought about the things people need to stop doing in order to make the world a better place, and practised our oracy skills to generate ideas in groups. We realised there are some things that we can’t do much about unfortunately (e.g. wars), but lots we can do (e.g. stop littering).
Year 5 have been designing their Truss bridges this week ready for DT day when they are going to be making them. They decided on which truss to use, how many columns and the materials that would be best.
Year 6 have been exploring what happened during WW2 and the impact it had. We used playdough to represent the axis countries. We then had to listen carefully and move the playdough according to what happened in the first part of WW2. We were surprised to see how quickly countries were invaded across Europe! We finished our playdough war after Germany took over the Channel islands, because on the 10th July, the Battle of Britain began and the fighting took to the skies.
Year 6 also created beautiful mixed media artwork, "Peace in Our Hands," to tie in with their learning about WW2 and Remembrance Day. Focusing on colour contrast, the task offered a meaningful way for them to reflect on the sacrifices made. Take a look at their incredible work!
