Overview of Learning

Year 2 is an opportunity for the children to learn, grow, explore and have lots of fun. Our topics include The Great Fire of London, Brilliant Brazil, Frozen Planet and many more. Our learning is hands-on with a range of activities and experiences including exploring the history of the seaside, visiting Kingston Upon Thames and even trapping monsters! We provide a range of memorable experiences to engage and inspire the children. You can learn more about our curriculum by looking at our long term plan for the year below.

Year 2 is a chance for the children to gain independence and confidence before leaving Key Stage 1. We aim for the children to read fluently, with just a few words still being sounded out, and write short stories and other pieces of writing, using full stops and capital letters and a good range of vocabulary.  In maths, the children should be embedding and extending their number bond knowledge and tackle more complex questions.

The PE days in Year 2 are Monday and Thursday. On these days your child will need to be wearing their PE kit and they can stay in this all day.

Learn All About Year 2

We loved meeting so many families at our Curriculum Event on Wednesday 27th September 2023. If you were unable to attend, here are the presentation slides with lots of information about the year ahead.

Statutory Assessment Information

End of KS1 assessments have now become non-statutory for the 2023/24 academic year onwards. At Ellingham, we will continue to use end of year assessments to help inform teacher judgements, as we do in all year groups.

Homework will be sent home each Monday and is due back the following week.

It is important that your child practises their key skills in reading, writing and maths regularly and recalls learning with you at home.

The children in Year 2 are asked to:

Helping Your Child At Home

Reading and Writing

We use Sounds Write Phonics, a well-researched programme that enables children to decode (read) and encode (write/spell) every word they encounter.

To help your child become a fluent reader, daily reading at home is a must.  The more your child reads the more fluent they will become.  We send home decodable book - linked to Sounds Write phonics - but also a book for pleasure, which you can read with or to them, so that they become familiar with different styles of books and stories.

The Sounds Write app offers games and learning activities to do at home and is available to download for free here

Sounds Write offers a free parent course to help you support your child. There are a number of supporting documents below for top tips to encourage and promote Reading for Pleasure at home.  Please record in your child’s reading record each time you read so that we can see how your child is progressing at home; we also use this to communicate with you.

To encourage Reading for Pleasure, you can use Oxford Owl to read and listen to a variety of books on the computer or I-pad! Each class will have a log in for the children to access more books and audiobooks at home. and go to ‘my class login’.

Regular exposure to the Year 2 common exception words will help your child to read and write them independently. You can find a handout below.

Our teaching aims to provide every child with maths mastery

skills.  This is a small step approach that deepens children's knowledge of number and operations.  Being fluent with number bonds is essential to this and daily practice on Numbots really helps this. Each child has a unique log in where they can play games and practise and apply skills, such as subitising, number bonds and addition and subtraction.
