Children return on
Tuesday 4th November
What a wonderful fortnight it has been! The children have enjoyed the ongoing rays of sunshine during playtime, as have the staff! We've purchased a new set of goalposts which our young footballers have certainly made good use of.
Earlier this week, I had the wonderful sight of seeing our youngest pupils walk beautifully outside the main reception doors as they went on a scent hunt! The nursery children all bent down to smell the yellow flowers Mrs Peters so kindly potted at our entrance, and it was so sweet. It brought to mind the exciting future plans we have for the new Sensory Garden in the main playground. This will be a carefully planned and intricately structured haven of the natural world, where children will be guided to stop and stare / smell / listen and feel. In that one gesture from the Nursery children, I was reminded how instinctive to our human nature it is to engage those senses in the present moment. We will keep you updated of the progress!
This week we held our first Open Event for parents choosing a local primary school for September 2026. Many of our wonderful Year 6 Leaders were on hand to talk through the curriculum with these parents as they arrived. After a short talk, these ambassadors then showed them around our school, talking with great maturity about the aspects of school life that make Ellingham School so special. Many of the parents commented on the politeness and grace of our pupils. They also commented on how strongly the pupils spoke about the Wellbeing they receive and feel here. All our pupils are an absolute credit to Ellingham. We are lucky to have your children at our school. We are as proud of them as you are.
Thank you to all the parents who have recommended our school to friends and family. If you know of any families who would like to look around the school but cannot make the tour dates, please do let them know they can arrange a separate visit by contacting the school office.
Thank you. We wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Just a gentle reminder that all earrings should be studs only and not hoops or anything dangling, as there is a danger the latter can get caught. Thank you for your cooperation.

Our Year 6 Wellbeing Ambassadors attended the Primary Mental Health Conference at Southborough School on the 1st October.
During the event they took part in various activities and developed their understanding of mental health, resilience and working as a team . They learnt about calming strategies and created an action plan for what they wanted to achieve back at school.
One of their actions was to lead a well-being assembly. We can't wait to see our ambassadors blossom this year!
Watch out for the new menu which starts after half term. We will be extending the sandwich option to Year 1 and Year 2 children. There will be lots of the children's favourites including roast on a Wednesday , lasagne, BBQ chicken, pizza and fish fingers followed by fruit, yogurt, chocolate brownies and oat cookies.
This week for a breakfast snack we had a go at spreading butter and honey or jam on our toast.
We have been looking at our sense of taste and smell. We even added lemon slices and mint leaves to our water tray and made some lovely 'lemonade'.
Year 1 explored their senses in Science this week to see if they work better on their own or together. The children closed their eyes and sniffed 3 mystery items to see if they could identify them on their smell alone. Although lots of us enjoy eating ketchup, this was a smell the children disliked!
On Thursday Year 2 went by bus to Kingston. Our guide, Carole, took us around many important places in Kingston, such as the King's Stone, the River Thames and the Market Place. We even did our own mini-coronation by the King's Stone, where we all became kings and queens!
Year 3 had a visit from Keren from Insight on Wednesday. They looked at the key question 'What do Christians learn from the Creation story?' which links to their current RE topic.
In History this week, Year 5 were being real life Vikings. Each tribe produced their own resource and were trading these with other tribes in order to “survive”. They realised that they needed a mixture of all of the resources to live a safe and secure life.
On Friday, Year 4 travelled to the Natural History Museum to put their science knowledge to the test. Our young scientists absolutely loved exploring the different areas, from the smallest invertebrates to the biggest mammals, proving how much they've enjoyed their classification topic! The final mission of the day was to figure out if the prehistoric animals who now call the museum home were vertebrates (animals with a backbone). After some serious investigating, and 65 million years later, we are excited to report that 4G and 4RS were unanimous with their conclusion – yes, they were! A huge thank you to the wonderful parent volunteers who gave their time to help make the trip such a success.
On Friday 3rd of October, year six were really lucky to experience Victorian day! It was really not what I expected; I would not survive Victorian times!
I came in dressed as a chimney sweep and was swiftly ushered in by a very, strict teacher. We had to find Victorian names once we got into class (I chose Lucy). Lots of people were dressed as chimney sweeps and wealthy people. It was so fun looking at everyones outfits!
We were ordered to quietly file down the staircase to the hall, which was unusual. We sat on benches for English and maths. There was no technology so we had to use chalk and slates. If you were left handed, it was mandatory that you write with your right! We had to read out the Lord's prayer and right it on a chalk board. On our knees! Next was maths. We had to chant times tables and solve IMPOSSIBLE math problems.
After break, boys and girls were split up to different classes. Girls did embroidery and boys did technical drawings (unfair!). We had to sew the first letter of our Victorian names. It was so hard and very annoying when my needle fell! We then went back to our original class to make the Victoria Sponge cake mixture! My job was cracking the eggs. It was very pressurising as we couldn't get any on the table. It baked at lunch.
Undoubtably my favourite time of the day was break time as we pretended to live as poor Victorians! Me and my friends went up to the well dressed people and begged for food and money, made up plans to escape the workhouse and pretended to be peoples slaves!
When we came back from lunch, we learned that rich people played with rocking horses and doll houses where as the poor children made make shift toys like thaumatropes or spinning tops. We chose to craft thaumatropes, which are basically mini animations like a cage and a bird. When you spin it, it merges into one. I did flowers and bees!
Because of cakes baked over the period of lunch we got to fill them with some savoury things. (Jam and cream.) I (generously) placed quite a lot of Jam and cream in mine, luckily I was stopped by Mrs Addams or there would have been nothing left for the others!
My conclusion was that Victorian times where tough. I struggle to eat my sponge cake whilst filling it! But it was a fine experience but I hope our teachers don't get any ideas of getting more strict! (not that they where before!). I loved Victorian day and would definitely love to do it again.
