We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Summer Fair tomorrow. The children have been reminded to wear sun cream as it's going to be hot and sunny. There are lots of exciting stalls, bouncy castles, beat the goalie, nerf gun challenge and entertainment from our dance club and choir.
Please bring cash along for a £1 entrance donation (adults only). Tokens for the stalls will be available to purchase in the playground using cash or card.
Our school councillors and other Y6 ambassadors visited the Houses of Parliament to tour the chambers where laws are made and to start to understand how the country is governed. They were incredible representatives of our school with their beautiful behaviour
David Hockney is the Artist of the Month of June. The deadline for this competition is Monday 30th June.
Reception took us on a visit to Old McDonald's Farm, taking in the Wheels on the Bus and some excellent animal impressions. We loved their performance.
Immy, Emelia and Alexandra were inspired by Mrs Keogh's assembly about Deaf Awareness Week so much so that they created their own assembly to teach all Ellingham children some basic sign language. They wanted to show respect so that any hearing impaired visitor would feel welcome and included in our school. We practised today in our celebration assembly. The children were fantastic and we are so proud of the girl's commitment to inclusivity and delighted that .
Year 6 recently competed in the borough cricket competition, demonstrating excellent teamwork and determination.
We were incredibly proud of their efforts, winning one and losing one.
Over the last two weeks the Nursery has been learning about butterflies and the cycle of a butterfly. Some caterpillars arrived and we watched them grow bigger and bigger until they formed their chrysalis. We then waited for a couple of days before they hatched and we had some butterflies. We then took them over to the trim trail to let them fly off.
It has been an exciting week in Reception. On Wednesday, we released five painted ladies after they emerged from their chrysalises and today we noticed that our ladybirds were emerging from their pupa stage. They will be going home with Mrs Peters so that they can hopefully eat all the aphids she has on the plants in her garden!
Year 1 ensured that their outdoor space is blooming marvellous by planting some beautiful flowers.
Year 1 planted flowers and Year 2 planted them! They have been learning about plants and have been growing sunflowers. Each week they have been measuring them, and counting how many leaves have grown. They also had fun sketching and painting sunflowers.
This week, the Year 3 children shared their 'belonging' stories with the children in Year 1, based on the book 'The Invisible' by Tom Percival. Their stories told the tale of their own character who felt isolated in their new school but became part of the community by volunteering to brighten up the environment. The younger audience enjoyed these narratives and provided lots of encouraging feedback!
As one of our experience activities in English, Year 3 learnt about the different types of Roman gladiators. To fully embrace the role, they made their own javelins and tested these 'weapons' in the playground. Hopefully they will be able to include all this knowledge in their historical diary entries over the next few weeks.
This week, Year 3 embarked on a meaningful trip to The King's Centre foodbank, connecting their classroom learning about local volunteering with real-world impact. The children brought thoughtful donations and heard directly from the incredible team of volunteers about their essential work and why they dedicate their time to helping others in need. It was a truly insightful experience for everyone involved.
We want to extend a massive thank you to all the Year 3 families for your fantastic donations! The King's Centre foodbank expressed their sincere gratitude for your generosity.
Inspired to help? The foodbank is always grateful for contributions of tinned fish, soup, fruit, vegetables, UHT milk, pasta sauce, coffee, shampoo, or washing machine capsules. You can drop off donations at The King's Centre reception anytime they're open. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15M5LVpZkoavQREwlmgp2WHELvsN5f1Tc
It has been a fun-packed week for Year 5, starting with a visit to Chessington School to sample a selection of lessons. It was an amazing experience for them. They also went to Southborough for a Reading Conference that featured the author of The Secret of Golden Island. This books had been read in Year 5 classes across the south of the borough and all the primary children at the event could participate with the author and ask insightful questions.
Year 6 has had an incredibly busy and enriching few weeks.
Last Friday, they visited Chessington School for a fascinating science lesson, performing a sheep heart dissection. This hands-on experience allowed them to apply their knowledge of the human body. Our well-behaved and enthusiastic scientists meticulously observed, felt, and explored the heart's textures, successfully identifying its four chambers and valves. They even discovered that one side of the heart had thicker tissue, understanding it works harder to pump blood. The Chessington School science teacher was blown away by our children's knowledge.
On Monday, the children participated in a 'Move on Up' transition workshop at the King's Centre. This valuable session provided a fantastic chance for them to meet children from their new schools and engage in activities designed to prepare them for the year ahead. Challenges included tying their own ties and honing their organisational skills, fostering independence and readiness for secondary school.
Today, Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic cultural outing to the Polka Theatre to see 'The Boy with Wings.' This offered a wonderful opportunity for the children to witness a professional theatrical performance. They even had the chance to participate in a Q&A session with the actors, gaining insights into the world of performance. The children are now enthusiastic about applying the skills they observed on stage to their own upcoming performances.
