Dear parents and carers,
It has been another vibrant week here at Ellingham. As the spring sunshine begins to brighten our playground, it’s wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm our pupils are bringing to their learning. Here are a few highlights from the past seven days:
Last Friday, our Year 4 cohort took over the school for their highly anticipated overnight sleepover, and I am delighted to report it was a huge success! The evening was filled with arts and science activities, and (eventually) some sleep. The children turned into mini-chefs, topping their own homemade pizzas for dinner. After some evening games, the school hall was transformed into a giant campsite. It was a joy to see the children building independence and bonding outside of the traditional classroom setting. A huge thank you to the staff who gave up their Friday night to make this such a memorable experience.
As we approach the SATs period, I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on our Year 6 pupils. They have been working incredibly hard, showing a level of maturity and dedication that makes us all very proud. While these assessments are a checkpoint in their academic journey, the way the children are supporting one another and staying focused is a testament to their character. Keep up the brilliant effort, Year 6—you are doing a fantastic job!
Our commitment to physical education remains a top priority. We are thrilled that our high level of sports coaching continues across all year groups this term. Whether it’s honing skills in football, cricket, or athletics, the Be Sports coaches recognise the high standards of teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the school.
Looking ahead to this weekend, the city will be buzzing with the energy of the London Marathon. We are incredibly proud to share that a group of our pupils will be heading to central London this Saturday to take part in the TCS Mini London Marathon. They will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run the final stretch of the official course and cross the famous finish line on The Mall. Whether they are running the one-mile distance or the full 2.6km, we wish them the very best of luck. To any of our parents or friends taking part in the full 26.2 miles on Sunday—we are rooting for you!
Take care, and have a lovely weekend.
Best wishes,
Margaret

Well done to 4G who have the highest class attendance for the third week in a row!
Well done to the following classes for winning their year group battles this week:
3BP, 4G, 5CS and 6H!
With a big congratulations to Tosia, Marley B, Imogen M and Ryan M for coming in first place in each battle.
Be sure to take part in the whole school battle this week.
If you can help at the Summer Fair email: friendsofellingham@outlook.com or contact the school office.
We can only run these events if we have the support of volunteers - Thank you in advance.

This week in nursery we have been enjoying each other's company and been good friends. The more we have laughed the more we have learned. We have also been very sensible while practising our cutting skills.
Cherry Class have had green fingers this week as we’ve planted sunflower seeds. We carefully followed instructions and put our pots in a sunny spot. We are going to water them daily and wait patiently for them to start growing.
Year 1 went outside in Science this week to observe and draw trees. The children worked hard to draw each part they could see and then learnt about the structure of a tree and each part’s job.
In Art, Year 2 did some natural collage this week! We collected some natural materials from the school grounds and then used them to make a collage of British landmarks. Can you tell which ones we made?
As part of their topic on climate change, Year 3 read the book ‘Climate Action’ in English this week and have been investigating the issue of flooding. We looked at natural flood defences and tested different materials (sand, soil, clay and sticks) in groups.
Year 4 had the whole school to themselves on Friday night as they took part in their highly anticipated sleep over. Children participated in a range of exciting activities and loved playing some wide games in the playground in the evening. They were particularly fond of making their own pizzas to eat at the Ellingham Pizzeria! They children did an amazing job and even finished the evening’s festivities with some ice cream, snacks and a film. A massive thank you to all of the staff who gave up their evening to make this event possible!
This week, Year 5 transformed into a living solar system to master the mechanics of day and night. By acting as "Human Earths" rotating on their axes, students used torches to represent the Sun, observing how light only illuminates the side facing the source. This physical modeling clarified that our 24-hour cycle is caused by rotation, not the Sun moving through space. Students witnessed "sunrise" and "sunset" firsthand as they spun, proving that while one hemisphere enjoys daylight, the other remains in shadow. It was a brilliant, hands-on way to ground complex celestial movements!
Year 6 have started looking at the picture book The Whale by Ethan and Vita Murrow. This visually captivating story served as the perfect backdrop for our work on inference, as the children worked hard to decode the complex emotions of the boy and girl at the heart of it. The children took to the "stage" to act out the scene where the characters meet. There was a wonderful buzz in the classroom as they rehearsed how they came together to finally spot a magnificent pod of whales. The children thoroughly enjoyed performing for their peers, using their voices and body language to bring the story to life. Well done, Year 6!

This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
