At Ellingham Primary School, we believe that working together with our families is key to creating the best possible learning environment for our children. It is always important to hear from Ellingham families to find out what you think is going well and where we can improve further. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us understand your perspectives and make informed decisions about the future of our school, particularly for next year when Mrs Johonnett will be headteacher.
We are currently inviting all parents and carers to participate in our short survey. Your input will directly contribute to our school development plans, ensuring that we continue to meet the needs of our students and the wider school community.
Please click on the Google link to complete this survey: Ellingham Parent Survey
As part of this important process, we are also working with the education safeguarding adviser for Achieving for Children in Kingston and Richmond. A section of the survey is dedicated to understanding how well we keep children safe at school. Your feedback in this area is crucial in helping us maintain a secure and supportive environment for all our students.
We have started to replace our old entry system as it is at the end of its life (as many of you will know)!
The buzzer system at both gates and the main door now have cameras to allow us to speak to anyone wanting to come into the school.
This is still work in progress and we will need to operate two systems while the work is completed next week. Please bear with us as we work through any glitches.
The alleyway from Garrison Lane will be open for drop-off and pick-up but closed during the day.
Garrison Lane gate opening times:
8.35 am to 8.50 am
3.05 pm to 3.30 pm
Congratulations to Regan (Y3) and Anya (Y5) for their artwork inspired by Stephen Wiltshire.
Recycling Assembly - Become a School Recycling Hero!
This week, our school's Eco team presented an important assembly, inspiring students to become true Recycling Heroes! The assembly focused on why recycling is so crucial for our planet. It's important to recycle because, without it, our waste goes to landfills – big holes in the ground filled with rubbish that can take hundreds of years to disappear.
The Eco team explained what we throw away at school, including leftover food, paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and wrappers, and yogurt pots. They highlighted the positive impact of recycling, showing how plastic can be turned into new bottles or toys, paper into new paper and card or egg boxes, and food waste into compost to help plants grow.
To make recycling easier for everyone, new bins will be available around the school later this week. By working together, we can make a significant difference in creating a greener, more sustainable school and a healthier planet for everyone.
Thank you for supporting the recent Friends of Ellingham Hop-a-Thon! It was wonderful to see all the children enthusiastically taking part before the Easter break.
The Friends of Ellingham invested a lot of time organising and implementing the amazing events as a fundraiser for the school. It would be great if you could send in your child's sponsorship money as soon as possible as not many have been returned so far. It is only with your generosity that we can run such events - thank you to all who have contributed.
This will allow us to finalise our fundraising total and celebrate the success of this fun event. Thank you once again for your ongoing support of Friends of Ellingham!
As part of our topic on "People who help us", we had a visit from the police. They came and told us about some of the things they do, like helping people who are in trouble and helping us if we get lost. They brought some of their uniform for the children to try on and a police car for us to sit in. They even put on the blue flashing lights!
If you work in any profession like a doctor, nurse, firefighter, or dentist and would be willing to come and talk to the nursery about what you do, please let Mrs. Kingshott know via the School Office.
Reception class had a brilliant sunny day out at Bocketts Farm! They loved feeding the sheep and meeting other animals. The pig race was super exciting, and they enjoyed a fun tractor ride around the farm. It was a fantastic day for everyone!
Year 1 have been learning all about children around the world and how they live their lives. They noticed similarities and differences to the things we do each day. The children have worked hard in English to write a letter all about themselves and wrote them up into neat for display so keep an eye out for their neat work!
Year 2 recently had a very special day! After weeks of patiently caring for caterpillars, they were finally able to release the beautiful butterflies they had been growing.
The children learned all about the butterfly life cycle, from tiny eggs to hungry caterpillars, and then the magical transformation into a chrysalis. Finally, they witnessed the amazing moment when the butterflies took their first flights in the playground. It was very exciting to release the butterflies.
Year 3 have been exploring the cause and prevention strategies for flooding. We looked at which natural materials best protected against soil. Most of us thought it would be clay or sand but our experiment shows soil as the most effective natural substances. This shows us that we need to have green areas next to our rivers and waterways to keep our homes safe from flooding.
Year 4 Assembly
Year 4 had a great assembly today, focusing on last term's topic Time on the Thames and drawing from their knowledge gained while walking along the south bank in London.
Particularly memorable were the facts about the Great Stink brought to smelly life through their avid descriptions. Thankfully some beautiful singing changed the mood!
Last week in science, Year 5 participated in a debate with the motion ‘The Earth is Flat’! We had so much fun respectfully disagreeing and sharing our own ideas for either side of the argument!
“We were talking about if we thought the earth was flat or spherical. The lesson was so fun and we had a debate over that question. There were so many great arguments and it actually felt like a real debate!”
Phoebe
Year 6 have enjoyed revising their reasoning skills with friends in preparation for SATs. We are very impressed by their dedication to succeed in the run up to the real thing! We are so proud of them and all the hard work they have put in.
This week year 6 have been finding out how the human heart works. The children constructed detailed models out of plasticine to help them identify the different parts and their functions, such as the four chambers and valves! We learnt that blue represents the deoxygenated blood and red represents the oxygenated blood. They demonstrated excellent team work and used scientific vocabulary throughout their discussions.
We are incredibly proud to announce that our Year 5 boys football team won the Battle of the Borough Cup, emerging as champions across both Richmond and Kingston! After weeks of hard work, determination, and teamwork, our boys triumphed against strong competition to claim the trophy. Their outstanding performance on the pitch reflects not only their sporting talent but also their commitment to excellence and teamwork.
The girls also played some great matches and had a lot of fun doing so. Next year it's going to be boys and girls!!!
Congratulations to all involved — you’ve made the whole school proud!
Both teams tried incredibly hard and had an amazing time playing football with our classmates
Liv (5S)
Our team felt victorious as we won all but one of our matches. Ellingham boys won the whole tournament!
Max, Teddy and Daniel (5S)
A huge congratulations to Team Ellingham for their incredible performance at the London Mini Marathon last Saturday! Representing our school with pride, passion, and perseverance, the team of 15 children truly inspired us all with their energy and enthusiasm.
It was a fantastic event to be part of — from the cheering crowds to the buzzing atmosphere, every moment was filled with excitement and community spirit. The atmosphere was electric as our students joined thousands of other young athletes to experience the thrill of marathon day, running a section of the iconic London Marathon course. Team Ellingham even received several shout-outs from the event organisers!
We’re also proud to share that the team raised money for Friends of Ellingham, helping to support valuable projects and experiences for all our pupils. Well done to every runner and supporter - you’ve made us proud and shown what it means to be part of Team Ellingham.
The run was challenging but we all felt very proud and a great sense of achievement afterwards! Amelie and Miya (5S)
I would love to have the opportunity to run it again! Oliver (5JC)
I felt very proud of all the Ellingham runners as I watched from the side lines! I went along to support my best friend Toby! The atmosphere was amazing! Freddie (4RS)
I thought it was a fantastic experience! Angelica (6H)
Looking at a landmark of London (Buckingham Palace) as I was running made it feel like a breeze! I managed it the whole run in just 11 minutes. The quickest time out of all of the Chessington schools! Cody (6H)
We are excited to invite you to a special coffee morning to learn more about Ellingham Primary School’s approach to supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Please join us on Thursday, June 5th, at 9am for a coffee and a chat with other parents of children with SEND.
During the morning, we will share our school’s SEND Policy and Information Report and welcome your valuable feedback. This will also be a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents in a safe and supportive environment, allowing you to build relationships and share ideas with each other. We look forward to seeing you there.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful and potentially traumatic events or situations that occur during childhood or adolescence. These can include single events or ongoing threats to a child's safety, security, trust, or physical well-being. These experiences can significantly impact a child's development.
Children may develop adaptations in order to survive, cope with adversity, seek safety or control, or make sense of what they have gone through.
As parents, understanding ACEs is the first step. By being aware, we can be more attuned to our children's experiences and provide the necessary support. Creating a safe, stable, and nurturing environment is crucial. If you suspect your child has experienced trauma, seeking professional support is essential. Please see the poster below for more information.
If you have any concerns or questions please contact the Pupil Support team via the school office or email pupilsupport@elp.rbksch.org for advice.
It is really important to put safeguards in place to protect your children so that they are safe online. Children need to feel comfortable and confident if they have any worries about what they are seeing and who they are talking to online.
There are age limits on games and social media sites for a reason - because they can influence and frighten children in a harmful way. Please adhere to these as we are seeing more children mimicking computer games with play-fighting which quickly turns into more physical and upsetting play.
NSPCC has a new Techosaurus, an online safety dinosaur aimed at talking positively about on-line safety.
Your Healthcare’s Children's Speech and Language Team has introduced a new approach to supporting families by relaunching their Facebook page and Instagram account, with a programme of topical content for families with children who have speech, language and communication needs and/or swallowing needs. The social media pages are designed to serve as a virtual support system, offering tips, resources, personalised and original content and a platform for connection among families experiencing similar challenges.
