Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wet week! The weather hasn't dampened the Ellingham spirit, however, with the creative and engaging learning happening all over the school, both in classrooms and on visits which you will read about below.
A huge "Well Done" to Year 3 for their wonderful assembly this morning! We were transported back thousands of years to the banks of the Nile. From the intricate details of the mummification process (which was surprisingly graphic!) to the singing and comedy, it was a triumph. It was wonderful to see so many parents in the hall to support them. Thank you for supporting all the children.
The confidence the children showed in the assembly is just of the ways Ellingham teaches Oracy throughout the curriculum. Just as literacy is the mastery of reading and writing, oracy is the mastery of speaking and listening. We believe that being able to articulate ideas fluently is one of the most important life skills we can teach. By teaching children how to speak (considering projection, tone, and eye contact) and what to say (structuring an argument), we are empowering them for a future beyond our school gates. I look forward to seeing Year 2 perform their class assembly next week!
I hope you have some lovely, fun things planned for this weekend!
With best wishes,
Margaret

Please do come along to our coffee morning at 9am on Friday 6th February 2026.
It is for all parents to talk about supporting your child's mental health on the digital world and will be run by Mrs Sephton and the Emotional health team in Kingston
Ellingham is taking part in NSPCC’s Number Day to enjoy all things Maths.
FRIDAY 6TH FEBRUARY 2026
The day will include Times Table Rockstar battles,‘Who Wants to be a Mathionaire?’ games, fraction frenzies and ‘Build a Bot’ activities, with all children exploring Maths in a fun, practical way.
Don’t forget to get creative and dress as a digit for Number Day on Friday 6th February. Ideas include coming to school dressed as an Uno card, a calculator, dice, dart board or even a clock!
If your child wishes to take part in ‘Digit Dress Up’, we ask for a £1 donation to NSPCC. Please use the QR code on the poster to make a donation.
This week Year 4 have taken home their Brite recipe boxes for Monday Pie or Vegetarian Monday Pie. We hope that have fun cooking and eating their meals. The recipes are below if you would like to try them.
Well done to 3BP, 4G, 5S and 6JC who are the year group champions for last week’s TTRS battle. This week’s battle is boys vs girls! Make sure you log in to help out your team!
Congratulations to Year 2 - Oak Class with 99.6% attendance - that's amazing!
Congratulations to the children this week who had hot chocolate with Mrs Sephton to celebrate their improved attendance.
As we draw closer to the publication of our Inspection report, I wanted to share this video from Ofsted that explains the new report card system. It is a completely different way of reporting to parents and carers. More importantly, the report card cannot be compared to the previous one-word judgements. This video is a good introduction to the new wording. I encourage you to watch it.
This week, some of our Year 2 students took part in a football festival facing other neighbouring schools. Dressed in their oversized team bibs, the children embraced the spirit of the game, focusing far more on high-fives and teamwork than the final score line. It was a joy to watch them navigate the field with such determination and celebration each goal with their friends.
Cherry Class had a visit from Emma Haines, who is an RSPCA officer. She told the children all about her job and we were all fascinated by some of the more unusual stories she told us, including how she had to rescue 81 cats, and also climb onto a boat to help a stranded fox! We also learnt the importance of looking after all animals.
Year 1 descended into darkness this week to test if objects in the classroom are transparent or opaque. The children shone a torch on different objects and had to see if the material let the light through. We then discussed why wood isn’t a suitable material for windows but glass is.
Year 2 is learning all about multiplication. We have used a range of resources to understand what multiplication means, and at the end of this week, we started to learn all about the two times table. We have loved it, and are so proud of how well we understand it!
Our Year 4 geographers swapped their desks for the great outdoors this week once again! As part of our Geography topic on Settlements, we headed out to the local area around Garrison Lane to see exactly what makes our neighborhood tick and to complete a professional settlement survey.
Armed with clipboards and keen eyes, the children mapped out the variety of land use in our community. We discovered that the area is a real "mixed bag" of activity:
Business & Industry: We spotted a few local shops and even some light industry tucked away, proving that people don't just live here—they work here too!
Housing Galore: From older houses to newer flats, we saw plenty of places that people call home.
Top-Notch Transport: Whether it’s the bus routes or the nearby road links, Year 4 concluded that getting from Chessington to Kingston and Central London is a breeze around here.
Leisure - there are things to do in our free time like visit the leisure centre, Chessington World of Adventures or local parks.
The highlight of the trip was our group discussion on why someone would choose to live here. The students were quick to point out that having everything—jobs, transport, great leisure choices and homes—all in one place makes for a "thriving settlement." Many agreed that the convenience of the local shops and the easy commute were huge selling points.
We definitely have some future urban planners in our midst!
This week, our Year 5 tech wizards stepped behind the lens to begin an exciting new filmmaking project. The students worked in small production teams to storyboard, direct, and film their own short sequences, focusing on capturing a variety of camera angles and steady shots. It’s been fantastic to see their creativity shine as they transitioned from initial concepts to active production.
Year 6 this week has started writing our own Non-Chronological reports based on Darwin’s theory of Evolution. We are taking inspiration from the book Moth- An Evolution Story. In our Art lessons we have re-created some of the peppered moths using charcoal and pastels. These will be used to create a year group display.
Congratulations to our pupils who were awarded certificates for our very important value this week: Courage.
Nelson Mandela said, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it."
Courage is as honourable when it is shown in small steps, however: "Courage does not always roar, sometimes it's the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow." Mary Ann Radmacher.
Save the date:
Friday March 20th - We will be having a Spring Disco for children. Further information to follow.
If you can help at either of these events please email: friendsofellingham@outlook.com or contact the school office.
We can only run these events if we have the support of volunteers - Thank you in advance.
