ELLINGHAM SCHOOL NEWS

Spring Clean Over Half-Term

You may have noticed a fresh look to the outside of the school building.  During the half-term break, all of the exterior walls and pathways to the entrance of the school were scrubbed free of mould and moss.  We are aware that, while this means we are sparkly, it has highlighted some cracks in the walkway and these will be repaired as our next step.

The balconies were also repaired so that they are back in use for the summer.

Ellingham Gate Closed During School Day With Immediate Effect

The Ellingham Road entrance will be closed from 9.00am until 3.05pm each day as the intercom and gate release system is not functioning.  We do not want to leave the gate open from a safeguarding perspective but the office number and Explorers mobile number will be displayed for emergencies. If you need to come into the school during the day, you will need to use the Harrow Close gate.  Gates will be open at the usual drop-off and pick-up times of 8.35am and 3.05pm.

The system needs to be replaced and will involve digging up the path - this will be planned to start just before the Easter holidays.  The Harrow Close system will be replaced in the summer term as this requires more extensive work.

No Parking In Merritt Medical Centre

We have been asked to advise families that cameras have been installed in the car park of Merritt Medical Centre and fines will be issued to anyone parking but not attending the centre.

Team Ellingham in TCS Mini London Marathon

We are thrilled to announce that 15 of our pupils have been selected via a ballot in assembly to represent Ellingham Primary School in the prestigious TCS Mini London Marathon!  This is an incredible opportunity for our young runners to showcase their determination, as they take on the challenge and strive for excellence.

There was a real sense of excitement in assembly as the names were drawn and we couldn’t be prouder of our lucky participants.  Now, as they begin their training, we encourage the whole school community to get behind them by offering encouragement and sponsorship.

Our runners will be raising money for Friends of Ellingham, helping to support projects and activities that benefit all our pupils - see link in the next article. Every donation, big or small, will make a difference!

Let’s rally behind our fantastic team and cheer them on as they prepare for this unforgettable experience.

Fundraising for Team Ellingham

We hope everyone had a fabulous half term and great first week back to school.  What exciting news to return to -15 students running 2.6km in the TCS London Mini Marathon. It's the most amazing event to be part of - the atmosphere is electric. It might inspire some to go on to do the full 26.2 miles in years to come.

The London Marathon is also a fabulous fund-raising opportunity. Friends of Ellingham have the goal of £5,000 this year.  We're  hoping we can all get behind the amazing Team Ellingham and show some support by sponsoring them to run the 2.6km. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Please find the link here.  https://gofund.me/a349d534

Friends of Ellingham Update

As the new chairs of Friends of Ellingham, we wanted to take this opportunity to share our progress so far and give you a glimpse of what's coming up.  We’re always on the lookout for new members, volunteers, ideas, and donations, and we hope these updates will keep you inspired and informed.

First and foremost, a massive thank you to the newest members of the Friends of Ellingham and to everyone who supported the Spooky Disco, Christmas Fair and Love Ellingham  — together, we've raised an incredible £2,685!  Your generosity and enthusiasm have been amazing, and we truly appreciate your support.

This year, our fundraising goal is £5,000, which will go towards some exciting projects, including:

🎵 A new sound system for the hall

🌸 A sensory garden to promote well-being

🌞 Much-needed shade for the playground

Thanks to your efforts, we’re well on our way to achieving this target. With your continued support and upcoming events like The Easter Extravaganza and, of course, the Summer Fair we're confident we’ll get there.

Thank you for being such a fantastic community and for helping make these improvements a reality!

Marvellous Maths Club

Today saw the launch of Maths Games Club with Miss Peart! Children from all year groups practised their maths skills to become number ninjas and mathmagicians whilst having fun with their friends. From Shut the Box to tangrams, Times Table Rockstars to Snakes and Ladders - lots of fun was certainly had all round!

Diary Date: Ellingham's STEM Week

We have so many exciting activities lined up to immerse the children in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and we are planning to celebrate the events of the week after school on Friday 14th March by welcoming parents and carers into school.

If you work in any of these fields and would be happy to come in and share your experience to a class or assembly, we would be grateful.  It always makes more sense to children when we have people who demonstrate how STEM is part of our daily lives.

LEARNING TOGETHER

Green-Fingered Year 3

Year 3 have been writing a letter in character as a keen gardener.  To start the week we planted bulbs and some of them are already making shoots.  We look forward to seeing them flourish over the coming weeks.

Year 4 Ride A Great Wave

Year 4 started their new art topic based on mixed media this week and explored the life and artistry of a Japanese printer named Katsushika Hokusai. They took inspiration from his 1831 famous piece ‘ The Great Wave’ and used collage to recreate it in groups.

They are proud of their stunning work.

A Journey for Year 5s

This week, Year 5 began reading their new text in English entitled 'The Journey'. In this lesson the children created and performed a piece of drama focusing on the main characters point of view and the challenging decision they had to make.

Year 6 Prove to Be Great Citizens

Year 6 had a fantastic morning taking part in Junior Citizenship at Chessington World of Adventures. They took part in engaging scenarios, including role-playing activities, encountering real-world situations they may face as they transition to secondary school and become more independent. It was a valuable opportunity for the children to practise decision-making, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Matthew in 6Q comments:

We left school shortly before 9am and got to Chessington World of Adventures around 9:15am to find our trip was in the hotel! Everyone there was friendly and experienced and gave us team names and a point system! My team was Chelsea Football! T he police, fire brigade and ambulances were all there. Some of the things we learned was that caffeine is a drug, extension plugs are dangerous, giraffes are endangered, a door can save you from a fire for 20-30 mins when it’s closed with something is at the bottom of the door, and so much more! The winning team was called Safe Superheroes!
