ELLINGHAM SCHOOL NEWS

We have had the most wonderful half-term teaching your children and we know they have had a marvellous time with lots of exciting trips, sports events, workshops and focus days to celebrate their learning.  Have a lovely break - relaxing, holidaying or exciting trips out.  Keep safe and we will see you back at school on Tuesday 31st October.

Mrs Keogh and the Ellingham Team

Harvest Festival Assembly

Thank you for your incredible donations which we will be taking to the food bank over the half-term.  Your generosity is overwhelming.

We learnt about the meaning of a harvest celebration through examining the word HARVEST, which could be rearranged to form the words HAVE, STARVE and SHARE.

If we are lucky enough to HAVE so much food and essentials, we must remember that there are those in the world who may STARVE because they do not. As an act of kindness we can SHARE.

Mastering Number Homework Project

Thank you to all Reception, Year 1 and 2 parents and carers for getting involved in our maths project.  We hope it was useful.  Could you please complete the attached feedback form so we can judge its success or improve for next time?

The Mayor of Royal Borough of Kingston is running a competition to design a Christmas card.  The deadline is 31st October.  The link contains all the details.

LEARNING TOGETHER

Class pictures from this week

Nursery - Teddy Bears Picnic

Following on with Goldilocks and the three bears this week in nursery we had a teddy bears' picnic. The children all brought in a bear from home and in school they made their own sandwich. We then sat all together at snack time with our teddies to eat our sandwiches, along with some fruit and a drink of milk.

Reception - Leaves are falling

Our reception class have learnt and performed a poem this week all about the autumn weather and leaves falling.

Year 2 Trip to Kingston Museum

Year 2 attended an exciting workshop at Kingston museum where they learnt lots about the history of of the Royal Borough of Kingston.

They then visited the Coronation stone and used their fantastic art skills to do an observational drawing of the landmark.  They saw Clattern Bridge, which is one of the oldest intact bridges in England, explored Kingston Museum and spotted some famous landmarks, such as the red telephone boxes and the Paper Trail!

They enjoyed seeing things they have learnt about in real life and represented Ellingham brilliantly!

Year 2 Reading & writing role models

Year 2 have worked hard this half term writing their very own books based around our English text Mr Underbed.

They published them and enjoyed sharing them with the Year 1 children who particularly liked the scary monsters Year 2 had created as their characters.

Year 3 glimpse into the world of prehistoric arts and crafts

Year 3 took part in all sorts of activities such as baking Iron Age oatcakes, making Stone Age jewellery and doing cave paintings.

It was super fun!

Year 4's Creativity and Practicality!

Year 4 have completed their textiles D.T project. They were sent a design brief from Smiggle to create a money container, aimed at a target audience of children between 6 and 10.

They spent weeks researching, creating designs and making prototypes. Using different sewing techniques and recycled materials, they created some amazing money containers.

We would also like to thank the parent volunteers who supported the children with their final product.

Year 4 field trip to investigate local wildlife habitat

On Thursday, Year 4 ventured out on a science field trip to Sir Francis Recreation Ground to survey the habitat dangers faced by animals in our local community.

They were able to use their knowledge to make posters with excellent suggestions to help protect the wild life in the surrounding area.

Year 5 and 6 Cross Country Superstars

On Wednesday 18th October, Ellingham runners represented the school by participating in a borough cross country event. We are so proud of the way the children participated.

Year 5 Unleash their inner Viking.

Year 5 had a fantastic Viking Day on Thursday. We started the day off learning about Norse Runes and writing our name using them, and then finished off by weaving our Viking longboat sails, which we had started in DT day earlier in the week.

The day culminated in creating our own Viking dhields and fact files about a chosen Viking topic! We had so much fun.

Gruesome Writing from Year 6

Year 6 have inspired us with their ambitious use of vocabulary to describe the villainous Grimy Nick from our text 'Street Child'. They have all used figurative language to create a vivid image in the reader's mind!

Year 6 Board game designers of the future

Year 6 have been working hard to design and create their own board games in DT this half term using their knowledge of simple circuits from their science lessons.

They spent the morning on Wednesday designing the exterior of their games and on Friday they completed the final step and built their own electrical circuits to complete them!
