Remembrance Day & Poppy Appeal
Next week, we will be marking Remembrance Day as we pause to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth.
A selection of Remembrance items—including traditional paper poppies, zip pulls, wristbands, and reflectors—are now available to purchase from the main school office. We ask for a minimum donation of £1 per item.
All proceeds go directly to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, which provides vital, lifelong financial, physical, and emotional support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families.

Dear Parents,
It has been a vibrant, purposeful week across the school, and the energy in every classroom has been wonderful to see.
We began our week on Monday with an inspiring INSET day for the entire staff team. Our teachers and support staff spent the day deepening their professional development, exploring evidence-based teaching strategies and refining our curriculum approaches. Investing in our team’s learning directly enriches what happens in the classroom.
Throughout the week, the children have settled into their work with remarkable focus and enthusiasm. From phonics and creative writing to investigative science and numeracy, their dedication to learning has shone through. Please be sure to look through your child’s year group updates and photo gallery below to see their hard work and proud smiles in action.
A special highlight of our week was Year 5’s educational visit to the Royal Albert Hall. This was a new visit that showcased talented young musicians and it sounded wonderfully inspiring. Well done, Year 5—you represented our school brilliantly.
As the colder, damper weather sets in, please ensure that every child comes to school wearing a warm, waterproof jacket or coat each day. Breaktimes and outdoor play are essential for fresh air and well-being, and we aim to be outside as much as the weather permits. Please check that your child’s name is clearly labelled inside their jacket so lost items can be quickly reunited with their owners.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes,
Margaret

On Monday, our new class teacher, Ms Nuttall, joined us at Ellingham as the co-teacher in Oak Class with Mrs Richardson.
Ms Nuttall is an experienced teacher having moved from an inner-London school. She met the staff team on Monday, and her new class on Tuesday. We are delighted she has joined us. Please do join us in welcoming her to our community.
As you know, regular attendance is one of the biggest factors in pupil achievement, both academically and socially. That is not what we think, it is what research evidence tell us.
We have attached the term dates for 2027-28 so that you are able to forward plan your holidays outside of term time.
Well done, 5S. You were here for nearly 100% over the past week. Your reward spinner stopped at 'Extra Play' - I hope you enjoyed it!
The Nursery children returned after the half-term with big smiles, full of excitement and ready to learn through play. We have enjoyed celebrating Diwali, exploring colourful decorations and getting messy making traditional tea lights. We have also been learning about Bornfire Night through creative activities and discussed staying safe as we celebrate.
It has been a joyful and busy start of the new term!
This week in Reception, we have been learning about Diwali, the Festival of Lights. The children have enjoyed finding out about this special celebration and have been busy creating colourful firework pictures and making their very own diwa lamps!
Year 1 have been using words like ‘longer’, ‘shorter’, ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ to compare objects in Maths recently. This week they explored the weight of objects in the classroom using scales and the words ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’.
In PSHE this term we are looking at ‘Celebrating Differences’. We started by talking about stereotypes, and then played a game where we decided whether we agreed, disagreed or didn’t know how we felt about some statements, such as ‘all boys love football.’. We then moved to an area of the classroom to show what we thought. There was some very interesting talk!
At the end of last term, the children did some wonderful writing and design work that they didn't get a chance to show off. In line with their Stone Age topic, they designed travel posters encouraging people to visit Stonehenge. Every child in the class produced a poster and gave 100% effort, leaving all the adults thoroughly impressed.
This week, Year 4 launched our exciting new science topic: teeth and digestion! To kick things off, the children explored how our mouths break down food by biting into fresh apples. We identified the different types of teeth—molars, canines, and incisors—and investigated their specific roles. The class even tried chewing solely with their incisors, quickly discovering it was nearly impossible without our trusty molars! Ask your child to show you which teeth do the crunching at dinner tonight.
On Wednesday, Year 5 had the incredible privilege of travelling into London to visit the iconic Royal Albert Hall for the ‘Future Makers’ concert. The event was the grand final of a nationwide competition showcasing some of the UK’s most talented young musicians aged 14 to 18. The atmosphere in the auditorium was electric from start to finish. Our pupils were treated to many outstanding acts, culminating in the thrilling moment when the overall winner was crowned! It was a truly exciting, inspiring experience and a wonderful opportunity for the children to witness young artists pursuing their passions at such a prestigious venue.
A huge thank you to all parent volunteers and well done to Year 5 for representing our school so brilliantly throughout the trip.
Sweet Science in Year 6!
Year 6 have kicked off their new science topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, by exploring how scientists group organisms using classification keys. To put their skills to the test, the children designed branching keys to classify Liquorice Allsorts based on observable features like shape, colour and pattern. It was a brilliant, hands-on activity that brought classification to life.
Next up, we will be applying these classification skills to the real natural world, examining micro-organisms, plants and animals.

This week’s Brite Box recipe is a vibrant, warming Shakshuka Traybake Crunch—a simple, crowd-pleasing dinner adapted from Marcus Rashford and Tom Kerridge’s Full Time Meals programme.
Packed with roasted peppers, red onion, tomatoes, and protein-rich beans, this dish bakes together in one tray before eggs are cracked right into the rich spiced sauce to gently set. It’s finished with homemade crispy, toasted bread croutons scattered on top for the ultimate crunch.

We have been asked by students at Kingston University to share a 90 second anonymous parent survey. They are looking at how families help young children with articulation and speech sounds at home.
