Dear Parents,
Today marked an incredibly special, emotional and memorable day at Ellingham as we said a heartfelt goodbye to two of our dearly loved and long-standing members of staff.
Lizette Worrall and Lorraine Diggins have dedicated years of service to our children, shaping countless lives and leaving an indelible mark on our school community. The corridors have been filled with tears, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. We held a special assembly marked with incredbily moving speeches from children, staff and FOE representing parents. We wish Lizette and Lorraine nothing but the absolute best in their next chapters. They will always be part of our school family.
Amist the bittersweet farewells, it was also good to look forward to the future during our Meet the Teacher sessions this week. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came into school to meet their child's new class teacher. Building a strong partnership between home and school is vital for children's success, and it was wonderful to see so many of you attend. If you were unable to make it, the slides are available in the Teaching and Learning section of the website under Year Group Information.
Thank you for all your Harvest Festival contributions. We postponed the assembly due to today's farewells, but will celebrate next week.
I wish you the most wonderful weekend.
Warm regards,
Margaret

Nursery Pear Class have been busy developing their early counting skills this week through play. The children have been practising counting confidently from 1 to 10, using a range of maths resources such as counting bears. They explored different ways to count amounts, touching and moving objects, pointing carefully, and counting out loud. This will support the children to begin to build strong number sense and independence.
It has been wonderful to see their focus, enthusiasm and growing confidence.
Reception have been reading the story Not Now Bernard in drawing club, ask them about the words: ignore, destroy, gobble and fierce some and their actions. The children drew some fantastic pictures of monsters and houses and came up with their own number and letter codes.
Year 1 are exploring the human body and our senses in Science this half term. The children sang ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes’ and then labelled any other main body parts they already knew. Thank you Dulcie for being our human stencil!
In science, Year 2 have been learning about minibeasts, and this week we looked at a range of habitats and micro habitats. We firstly learnt about many different habitats and sorted animals into where they lived and then we went outside to investigate two microhabitats within our school grounds. We observed the conditions and how many plants and animals we found in each.
Year 4 had a fantastic trip to the Natural History Museum! The children loved exploring the animal displays and put their science knowledge to work, accurately classifying creatures into birds, mammals, and reptiles. The big debate of the day: which group do dinosaurs belong to? On the journey home, everyone was brilliant at playing the train conductor’s silent game. A huge thank you to our parent helpers—we couldn't have done it without you!
This week, Year 5 put their woodwork and construction skills to the ultimate test! The children sawed, sanded, and glued their way to success, applying what they learned about engineering to build impressive group truss bridges. Their final creations look fantastic!
Year 6 had a brilliant time visiting Chessington School for a hands-on electricity workshop. Putting their scientific minds to the test, the children predicted, problem-solved and debugged tricky circuits to light up bulbs and sound buzzers. The absolute highlight of the session was using switches to send secret messages in Morse code!
The secondary teachers were thoroughly impressed by Year 6’s depth of knowledge—especially when they confidently explained the difference between a cell and a battery. A huge well done to our future engineers and scientists for representing our school so fantastically!
Tickets are available now for the Spooky Disco via the Arbor app.
This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
