Dear Parents,
It's been another wonderful week at Ellingham with all the children demonstrating the Olympic values all throughout the week. I walk past engaged and vibrant classrooms every day, and marvel at the politeness of the children in the playground.
At assembly today, we announced the winner of best class attendance. The children know our whole school target is 96%, and there's the beginnings of excitement as classes learn there will be a winner of the best term attendance!
There are lots of events in the diary. Please do look at the diary dates above. We are so excited about Friends of Ellingham's annual Spooky Disco on the 16th October. Payment for this will be available on the Arbor app on Monday. Please do book! Friends of Ellingham work incredibly hard to raise money for the children.
Enjoy the lovely sunshine and have a great weekend.
Warm regards,
Margaret

One of the best parts of this time of year is the election and appointment of the new Year 6 Ambassadors! Candidates for House Captains worked hard to write a speech before elections took place. Other Year 6's gave reasons for why they would be the best candidate for other ambassador roles. We are extremely proud at Ellingham that all Year 6's take on a leadership role. Thank you, Year 6, for all your hard work already done and yet to come.
Well done to all the children being celebrated for their Respect this week.
Crossing the Mid Line
Reception have been practising their gross motor skills, building those important muscles to help them gain control and coordination. This activity saw them leap from one stepping stone to another and move the bean bag across with one hand. The action of them moving the bean bags helps them to strengthen their shoulder muscles which, actually will help them to write!
Battling the Beanstalk!
Year 1 immersed themselves into their story ‘Jack and the Jelly Beanstalk’ this week to generate verbs. The children climbed, stretched, reached and clambered just like Jack would have.
Year 2 have been exploring texture and tone in Art, and this week we went outside and did some rubbings with a variety of materials, such as chalk, charcoal, pastels and crayons. Some rubbings were so effective!
Year 3 continued their Science unit on Rocks and Soils this week. Working in their house teams, the pupils examined various rock types to solve real-world problems, such as determining which rock makes the best roof tile. Through hands-on testing and experiments, they evaluated the properties of each sample to discover which rock was best suited for the job.
Year 4 artists have been hard at work mastering the art of sketchwork!
This term, the children have been practising key techniques to capture the interplay of light and shadow, transforming flat outlines into drawings with rich 3D definition. Their precision and attention to tone are truly impressive. Make sure to look at our gallery below to admire their incredible artwork—you’ll be amazed by the depth and detail on display!
Over the last two D&T lessons, both year 5 classes have been busy investigating the structural mechanics of bridges. The children explored three distinct bridge designs, building models of each type using card and spaghetti. They then applied key engineering techniques to reinforce their structures for maximum stability. Finally, the children put their creations to the ultimate test by using classroom resources as weights to see which designs held strong!
In English, Year 6 fully immersed themselves in our text, The Arrival by Shaun Tan. To step into the main character's shoes, the children used atmospheric music and drama to explore the powerful emotions of a father preparing to leave his home. They thoughtfully reflected on his perspective as he packs his most treasured belongings before departing on his journey.
In Science this week, the children enjoyed practically making circuits and debugging them when the bulbs wouldn’t light, using excellent teamwork and problem solving skills. They represented their circuits using scientific diagrams.
This is the full safeguarding team in school. They are all trained to Level 3 and everyone in the school received the annual update of Safeguarding Level 2 training at INSET. If you are worried about a child, please let one of the team know.
