It was lovely to see so many parents and carers for our newly-styled Curriculum Event. The children and teachers really enjoyed having you in their classroom, sharing the way they learn about phonics and reading and we received many positive comments about how helpful it was. Thank you.
Our priority this year is to focus on writing. Nationally, writing was the subject most affected by COVID and the lockdowns and the children lost their opportunity to be supported to write regularly. As a school, we are determined to support our children to write at the level we know they are capable of. Your support in achieving this is much appreciated.
We are planning to invite parents and families into school on a more regular basis to be a positive Ellingham community, which supports your children in their learning and well-being.

This half term, Year 5 are reading How to Train your Dragon in their English lessons. On Tuesday, they joined over 1000 primary children across the country to interview Cressida Cowell, who is the author of this amazing series of books. It was wonderful to hear about the inspiration for her books and how she holidayed on the real Isle of Berk. She is an ambassador of the Read for Good charity, which as you know we are supporting this term.
As the children are so inspired by Cressida Cowell's talk, Mrs Gait has been sharing the first chapters of some of her other titles, including The Wizards of Once' and Which Way to Anywhere.
Year 3 have been learning about digital devices in Computing and used the Tate Paint website today to recreate Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night'. They compared this to using pencils to draw and discussed which method was better.
Concern around the cost of living is affecting us all. The council has produced pages on the website to support any families that may need support during the difficult winter ahead. Advice on support with rising cost of living, finances, emergency food supplies, reducing energy and water costs, benefits, employment, mental health and wellbeing and specific pages for support for children and families. https://www.kingston.gov.uk/costoflivingsupport
Smiles2smiles are collecting donations for their Christmas hampers, which they distribute to needy families in the local area.
If you could possibly donate, they would very much appreciate biscuits, hats, scarves and gloves for all age groups and genders. It would be good to have these by 11th November so that they can check whether they need to make any additional donation requests
We continue to be top of the Street Tag charts, however lots of new local schools have joined so we can't take our eye of the ball now! For our new families, please click the link below to find out how to sign up and be part of the fun!

Richmond Council’s Appeals Service is looking to recruit to its pool of volunteers who sit on panels that hear and make decisions on school admissions appeals lodged by applicants who have been unsuccessful in securing a place at their chosen school.
The panels consist of trained volunteers selected from a pool, and who are independent of local schools and, as such, volunteers will not be able to serve on any panels for schools they have a connection to e.g. where their child attends. The panels meet virtually, as and when necessary (but mainly in the summer term).
The Service is looking for panel members who are discreet, good at listening to both sides of an argument, and able to digest and analyse information in order to make a reasoned decision. Further information and an application form are available from: education.appeals@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk or call 020 8891 7183 for a chat. Volunteers from underrepresented groups within the community are particularly encouraged to come forward.
